Hello Lovelies!

When I first started my #bookstagram (book-Instagram) I ran into a lot of different types of lingo that I had no idea what people were talking about and I had to kinda just learn as I went along.

So after having my #Bookstagram for a little over 6 months now, I have learned a thing or two, and today I am going to share one of those things with you.

What is a genre and a troupe?

A genre is a category of artistic composition, as in music or literature, characterized by similarities in form, style, or subject matter. (www.dictionary.com)

The word trope can refer to any type of figure of speech, theme, image, character, or plot element that is used many times. (https://literaryterms.net/trope/)

First, let's start with genre.

There are about 50 different types of genres, but to keep it simple today, we are going to narrow it down to the most popular ones:
  • Romance
  • Fantasy
  • Mystery
  • Horror
  • Thriller & Suspense
  • LGBTQ+
  • Contemporary Fiction
  • Graphic Novel
  • Young Adult
And more, but you get the picture.

Essentially, a genre is the type of story that a book is about.

Next, let's talk about troupe.

A troupe is a subject matter within a genre. For instance, I read romance novels, and I love to read dark romance, bully romance, reverse harem, age gap, and more. Those are all troupes.

Hopefully this will help you -->

So, I am hoping that cleared up any questions that you had about genre vs troupe.

Till next time.
